Can I afford the services of a professional Interior Designer?
Everyone can, for the specific reasons explained previously. If you resolve to expend the time, effort and resources required for your home's interior, you simply cannot afford not to obtain interior design services. Additionally, there is a movement within the profession toward a Professional Services fee structure. You see, residential Interior Designers have largely operated on a retail basis, securing their compensation from the profit margin built into the prices of products. But if you think about it, the actual product being marketed is the designer's ability, his or her skill and talent, not merely their accessibility to exclusive merchandise. For that reason a growing number of us are now paid hourly for our work, as in any professional discipline. In my practice, I offset the cost of my hourly fee by calculating the prices of product based on a nominal wholesale-plus structure.
